Rangers are set to clinch the loan signing of Premier League Burnley’s Czech striker Matej Vydra, according to the Glasgow Times.

According to the Times report, Rangers are set to clinch a deal which will see Vydra, 27, become the second signing on deadline day after Romanian international Ianis Hagi [Rangers].

The powerful striker – who has also played for Club Brugge, Udinese, Watford and Derby County – will provide competition and support to Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos.

Rangers’ hand may well have been forced into making this move after an injury to Jermain Defoe in the 2-0 win over Ross County.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard admitted he may have to act if the calf injury kept Defoe out for a sustained period of time and Vydra may well be his solution to the problem.

The big Czech striker has enjoyed prolific seasons in the English championship throughout his career, scoring 20 goals for Watford in 2012/13, 16 in 14/15 and 21 for Derby County in 17/18.

Vydra would sign for Burnley for an undisclosed fee in 2018 but he has struggled to make an impression for the Turf Moor side, making 26 appearances in total and scoring two goals.

He has made six Premier League appearances this season without registering a strike.

Vydra will be hoping to rejuvenate his career at Ibrox with few better places than the famous Rangers stadium to start scoring goals again.
