Rangers player slammed by Neil McCann on RTV for Aberdeen display

Popular RangersTV pundit and former Ibrox star Neil McCann has criticised Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos for his performance against Aberdeen.

The Gers drew 2-2 with a depleted Dons side at Ibrox on Wednesday night, with a Morelos header and a James Tavernier penalty sparing the hosts’ blushes after a disastrous opening period.

It’s the third time Steven Gerrard’s side have dropped points in their last four home matches and as a result, their lead at the top of the league table has been cut to two points.

RTV pundits on the night, McCann and Craig Moore, weren’t impressed and after criticising the hosts for failing to put pressure on Aberdeen’s makeshift wing-backs, the former took aim at Morelos.

“You’ve got Scott Brown playing as a central one of a [defensive] three – he could have played with his slippers on tonight,” said McCann [RangersTV]. “He could have! He’s a really experienced player and as you said, Craig, it’s only a matter of a ten-yard adaptation of his central midfield role.”

“But then you’re looking for Morelos to step in and say – he’s got a bit of wee bit of fire with Brown, he’s got history there – ‘I’m going to give you the worst night for a long time and I’m going to run you into the ground’.

“He was walking about! There was no movement, there was no urgency, he’s going down with wee knocks in his back. Hold it in, back in, knock it wide and get your backside into the box. There’s no urgency in a lot of players for me.”

All of the blame certainly can’t be levelled at Morelos for another lacklustre Rangers showing, particularly as he scored the goal that ultimately got the Gers back into the game.

It was his 101st goal on his 200th appearance for the club, which, alongside 45 assists, is a fantastic return.

He’s still one of a host of key Rangers players not yet firing on all cylinders this season, though, and a spark needs to arrive sooner rather than later or the Gers’ title defence will fail.
