Rangers must demand similar to £25m Celtic deal for quality Ibrox talent

As Rangers romped to another 3-0 Ibrox win in the Scottish Premiership, once again the quality of the club’s Croatian international left-back Borna Barisic shone through.

After a rocky Rangers start, the lethal 27-year-old wing-back fired in a stunning free-kick goal to set the Gers on their way against St. Johnstone.

Borna would add another assist for the second in an assured Man of the Match performance which was as consistent as it was expected.

Biggest STAR Your Club Are Trying To SIGN This Month

Steven Gerrard said the player has a long contract at the club amid links to Leeds United but everyone at Rangers knows all players at Ibrox have their price.

For Barisic, Rangers should be talking close to the money Arsenal paid Celtic for Kieran Tierney – believed to be £25m – and here’s why.

At 27, Barisic is in his prime and is undoubtedly the best left-back in this division, miles – yes miles – ahead of any any competition.

His delivery is verging on world-class and the player isn’t just doing this against St. Johnstone or St. Mirren, it’s Porto and Celtic, it’s in the biggest matches Rangers play.

Barisic is both reliably consistent and able to take his game up a level when the pressure is on. This is a sign of quality.

He is quickly emerging as one of the most dominant personalities on the field and unfortunately for the rest of Scotland, this season he appears to be growing those extra yards into his prime.

This is a leader – Barisic was NK Osijek captain before Rangers snapped him up – and the full-back regularly takes responsibility to drive the club up the field.

In the early stages of this season we’ve seen an even better Borna Barisic than the last, the full-back bursting past opponents down the left and having the composure to find teammates in the box.

It’s in the quality of his delivery – often done at pace – which makes the full-back such a huge asset to Rangers.

Not to mention the fact that quality left-backs aren’t always in abundance.

This isn’t an exaggeration – if Celtic can command this sort of fee for Kieran Tierney then I’d be dumbfounded if we weren’t demanding similar for a player who is a guaranteed starter for the Croatian international team.

Whilst he wasn’t involved then, this is the same team which reached the World Cup final in Russia in 2018.

If Premier League outfits like Leeds United or Tottenham Hotspur, or Serie A sides AS Roma or Napoli want Borna, then they will have to cough up, their interest alone a testament to the player’s ability.

If Rangers have been guilty of undervaluing their players in the past, it would criminal to do so with Borna Barisic.

In the current footballing climate, and with Barisic contracted to Ibrox until 2024, the bidding should start at around £20m.
