In June, the Scottish Sun reported that Jason Holt was ‘set to be reunited with Mark Warburton at QPR.’
The report followed Holt’s omission from Rangers’ pre-season training camp in Portugal, which had made it clear the midfielder was not in Steven Gerrard’s plans.
It seemed plausible that having already signed two ex-Gers in Lee Wallace and Liam Kelly, Warburton would swoop in to seal a cheap deal for another of his former charges, with the language of the report suggesting a deal was imminent.
Yet, when the transfer window for Premier League and EFL Championship clubs slammed shut last Thursday, it became apparent that the 26-year-old would not be heading for Loftus Road.
He’s cut off from first-team operations, but no clubs other than QPR have been credited with an interest.
He made 33 appearances on loan at Fleetwood Town last season, with manager Joey Barton expressing a desire to sign him permanently back in April [
Yet, since then, the Trawlermen have added Gers loanee Jordan Rossiter to their ranks, and don’t appear to have followed up that initial interest.

All hope is not lost though, with Scottish clubs and all EFL League One and Two outfits still able to do business for a number of weeks.
This is far from an ideal situation for a player who should be reaching the peak of his powers. He’s missed out on a proper pre-season and despite a couple of Dev team appearances, is unlikely to be match fit.
Hopefully, that won’t put prospective suitors off either a loan or permanent move, though.
When up to speed, Holt is an industrious and consistent performer in midfield, who proved he could do a job in the English third tier last season. Even if the Gers don’t get much of a fee for him, let’s hope the midfielder gets his move soon, so he can kick on with his career.
