Steven Gerrard has delivered an update ahead of the January transfer window, as quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times.

Rangers recruited heavily in the summer, strengthening in defence, central midfield and most notably, in wide areas.

They also moved several players on who were deemed surplus to requirements.

Yet, it seems that while there won’t be many incomings over the winter window, further outgoings should be expected.

Rangers manager Gerrard offers transfer prediction

“I’m not sure players will be out there in January to improve on what we’ve got,” said the Gers boss, as quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times. “Listen, if something pops up where we think it’ll strengthen us, of course, we’ll look into it.”

“But the next window will be more to downsize in terms of numbers. Because there are two or three who need to go and play. I’m finding it hard to get them into the 18 so it’ll be more about downsizing than adding to it.”

Verdict

Given the sheer number of players who have arrived over the last three windows, consolidating in January would be the sensible approach.

Gerrard stressed elsewhere in the interview that there was plenty of time for injuries and suspensions to rack up, which could prompt a dip into the market.

Yet, it’s clear that there are no plans for rampant buying under inbound Director of Football, Ross Wilson.

Instead, it’ll be about streamlining the current crop of players.

Joe Dodoo and Graham Dorrans were released from their deals on transfer deadline day, while strikers Ryan Hardie and Andy Dallas, who recently netted his first goal for his new club, were moved on earlier in the summer.

Yet, there are still fringe players on the wage bill who look unlikely to feature going forward, so it makes sense to target moving them on elsewhere when the window opens.

After a lacklustre showing at Tynecastle on Sunday afternoon, though, will he be reconsidering this plan?
