Steven Gerrard has discussed Rangers’ chances of winning silverware this season, ahead of Sunday afternoon’s Old Firm, as quoted by the Daily Record.
After a first campaign full of improvements but lacking in trophies, it’s time to kick on and the manager knows that.

Qualifying for the Europa League once more was a strong start, and early league form is a positive. This afternoon’s Old Firm will provide a strong indication of where his team is at, too.
Understandably, then, in the build-up to the game, he was unwilling to make big predictions about his side’s ambitions. Yet, one comment he made in particular, should excite Bears.
Rangers manager Gerrard discusses chances of success
“It’s difficult to predict if we’re within touching distance of anything because the competition is tough”, said Gerrard, as quoted by the Daily Record. “The hardest part is getting over the line. It’s tough to win but I do get a different feeling from this group.”
“So far, the evidence is good but we’re not in a position to pat ourselves on the back. Of course, we’re due credit for qualifying for the Europa League two years in a row but there’s a long way to go.
“The next step is, can we go and win? That’s the hardest part.”

Verdict
It’s greatly encouragingly to hear Gerrard say that the much-revamped squad for the 2019/20 campaign gives him a ‘different feeling’, a cause for optimism.
More conviction and ruthlessness is required than what was shown last term, and there’s been evidence of one or both of those traits in each of the opening three Premiership fixtures. First, there was a late winner at Killie, then Hibs were dispatched at Ibrox and finally, a piece of individual brilliance secured victory at St Mirren.
In an attempt to eradicate all too regular slip-ups, Gerrard has added quality and strong characters over the summer. He’s not quite putting his neck on the line, here, but he is hinting at big things to come.
Gers fans reading those words this morning will be hoping to see yet more evidence at Ibrox this afternoon.
