Rangers loanee Brandon Barker scooped the Goal of the Season award at EFL League One club Oxford United on Tuesday night.
Barker joined the Us in January in search of regular playing time after a stop-start first half of the season at Ibrox.
Since then, he’s made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and notching four assists.
The rapid winger’s numbers aren’t overly spectacular but one of his goals – in a 6-0 hammering of Crewe Alexandra in April – certainly was.
Barker won the ball off an opponent inside his own half, before beating two players and driving towards the left side of the penalty area. He then shifted inside onto his right foot, escaping another Crewe defender before firing a firm drive into the bottom right corner from just outside the D.
The stunning solo goal was deservedly named the club’s Goal of the Season, with the Ibrox loanee beating Matty Taylor, Sam Long, Mide Shodipo and James Henry to the award.
Barker has only featured in one of Oxford’s last five league matches due to injury problems, but ahead of their League One play-off semi-final next week, he says he’ll be “absolutely ready” to play a full part [Oxford Mail].
The two-leg tie against Blackpool – who finished three places above them in third – constitutes a big test for the 24-year-old and his teammates, as they bid to secure promotion to the Championship.
Barker is under contract at Rangers until the end of next season, but it remains to be seen whether or not he features in Steven Gerrard’s plans.
