Rangers loanee George Edmundson was played out of position and made a mistake that led to a goal as Derby County were hammered 4-0 by Cardiff City in the EFL Championship on Tuesday.

After struggling for playing time over the first half of the season at Ibrox, Edmundson headed to Pride Park on deadline day in search of some confidence-boosting minutes.

Prior to a midweek trip to Cardiff, things had been going relatively well.

The Gers loanee had featured in three of the Rams’ previous four matches, scoring in a win over Huddersfield Town and contributing to a clean sheet, while he also spoke of his delight at having the opportunity to play under Wayne Rooney.

However, things didn’t go so well on Tuesday evening.

Edmundson is a centre-back by trade but he started the game at the Cardiff City Stadium in a relatively unfamiliar holding midfield role.

Former Aberdeen player Graeme Shinnie went close early on for the visitors but after that, it was one-way traffic in terms of chances created.

The Derby defence went walkabout as Leandro Bacuna opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and the situation worsened rapidly after the interval with a Kieffer Moore header and a second from Bacuna putting the hosts out of sight before the hour mark.

Cardiff eased off somewhat after that, but they did score a fourth in injury time, with Edmundson at fault.

The Englishman received a pass from goalkeeper Kelle Roos on the edge of his own box and turned into trouble. He was promptly robbed of possession and left on the turf as Will Vaulks took aim and fired home a dipping shot from 25 yards.

A night to forget for the Rangers loanee and Rooney’s Derby, then, who are now 18th in the table and nine points above the relegation zone.
