The news of Robinson’s resignation after almost four years at the helm at Fir Park shocked Scottish football on Thursday.

“My goal was always to leave the club in a healthier position,” read part of the Northern Irishman’s statement. “I believe the staff and I have done this.”

“I now feel it is the time for someone new to take the club forward as I feel I have taken it as far as I can.”

Keith Lapsley has taken interim charge of the first-team and Well have asserted that they will move quickly to appoint a new permanent manager.

The resignation leaves Rangers loanee Jake Hastie in an uncertain position.

His loan deal is set to run until the end of the season, but the manager who gave him both his first opportunity at Premiership level and the chance to come back to Motherwell, has now departed.

Robinson publically criticised Hastie’s fitness and confidence levels when explaining his lack of impact over the opening months of the season, but praised him a fortnight ago for getting his head down, promising more regular playing opportunities over the coming weeks.

Hastie now faces the prospect of having to impress a new manager, though, with Motherwell currently just two points above bottom-of-the-table Hamilton, albeit with a game in hand.

The Gers loanee has made eight appearances so far this season but has only made one start and is yet to score or notch an assist.

Another promising young Rangers winger looks primed to head out on loan too after an EFL boss teased new signings amid links to the Scotland youth international.
