The 23-year-old centre-back has been at Vitesse since 2018 and has represented them in the Europa Conference League this season.

The Dutch club have tried to convince him to sign a new contract, but he’s spoken of his desire for a new challenge on a number of occasions and now Vitesse are turning their attention to finding his replacement.

“We have no time to lose,” said the Eredivisie side’s technical director Benjamin Schmedes [Herald].

“We are going to tackle signings and I expect the first results in the spring. You can see it as a threat (Doekhi leaving), but I see it as challenging opportunities.”

This news doesn’t mean the player will definitely be moving to Ibrox in the summer, though.

The Daily Record have reported [via La Repubblica] that Serie A outfit Genoa are amongst a number of other teams also tracking Doekhi.

It’s claimed that they are weighing up a pre-contract offer.

Gers likely to need defensive reinforcements

Rangers have already snapped up Hearts’ John Souttar on a pre-contract deal and they haven’t given up hope of tying Connor Goldson down to a new contract.

However, there’s still a good chance that the vice-captain will head for pastures new in the summer, while Leon Balogun’s deal is also up at the end of the season and Jack Simpson hasn’t cut it at Ibrox.

6ft 3″ Doekhi is powerful, mobile and comfortable on the ball, while he’s also relatively experienced for a 23-year-old.

However, his recent form has to be a concern.

Vitesse have been shipping a lot of goals and his performance levels have dipped below their usual high standards.

Meanwhile, Rangers forward Fashion Sakala has brilliantly roasted Ibrox teammate Amad Diallo on Instagram.
