Rangers-linked Lewis Ferguson gets Scotland recognition amid Watford interest

There’s scarcely a transfer window goes by that Rangers aren’t linked with Aberdeen star Lewis Ferguson as dad Derek’s and uncle Barry’s legacies remain at Ibrox.

Still only 22, it feels like Lewis has been around for a long time and it’s telling that the Dons talent has already made over 130 appearances at Pittodrie since joining from Hamilton as a teenager.

Talk of Ferguson moving to Rangers this window has been decidedly quiet however even if the Gers were named alongside the box-to-box midfielder amid interest from Premier League Watford.

The Scottish Sun claimed that Rangers were monitoring the situation surrounding the player as the Vicarage Road club reportedly lodged a £2m bid.

However, the player has been valued at north of £4m by Aberdeen legends still close to the club.

Aberdeen branded that offer “insulting” as Lewis handed in a transfer request but all the interest appears to have cooled heading into the final few days of the transfer window.

Ferguson is back in the Aberdeen team, playing well and scoring goals; so far the midfielder has four in nine appearances this season.

That form hasn’t gone unnoticed by Scotland manager Steve Clarke either who has called Ferguson up to the national side.

The midfielder is yet to be capped by Scotland but should he become a fully-fledged international in the upcoming matches with Denmark, Moldova and Austria, then it’s the latest sign of the player’s progress.

Contracted to Aberdeen until 2024, it will take a sizeable bid to pry him from the hands of a Dons side determined to get value for money for one of their biggest assets.

But with each passing season – and with European homegrown quotas to fill – Lewis Ferguson appears to become a more attractive prospect for Rangers.

Becoming a Scotland international is the next step in his development and it’s something that we’re sure everyone at Ibrox is monitoring closely.

Meanwhile, Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has been detailing the club’s special preparations ahead of the visit of Celtic.
