Rangers legend and former manager Ally McCoist has called on Scotland boss Steve Clarke to include on-fire Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland in his squad.
Shankland – who is a known bluenose – has been on fire in the Scottish Championship for the last two seasons with Ayr United and the Arabs.
McCoist feels the striker, who leads the Scottish Championship scoring charts with 10 goals, is exactly the type of player Scotland are crying out for.
“You’d have to say, [striker] is not a position that the national team is well-endowed with,” said McCoist, speaking on the Ladbrokes Social Club [via Evening Times].
“We can’t buy a goal.
“Shankland has had a fantastic 24 months, why not get him into the squad and have a look at him? Why not?
“We’re not going to qualify for the major tournament through the group campaign.
“If you’ve got an opportunity to blood one or two youngsters, maybe Stevie will do it.”
McCoist clearly believes that Shankland is destined for a higher level and that Scotland will do themselves a favour by blooding the 24-year-old for the international stage now.
Shankland’s scoring stats are certainly impressive. The striker has hit 75 goals from 85 appearances in little over two seasons, albeit in the Scottish Championship.
Shankland’s rampant form for Dundee United has also had some questioning whether Rangers should’ve pounced on the player when his contract expired at Ayr in the summer.
