Rangers' Kilmarnock loss proves a lack of quality strength in depth

Rangers’ season didn’t so much roll to an end at the weekend as much as it did grind to a screeching halt.
Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock was a stark reminder of the issues in the playing squad at Ibrox. It was a pretty loud reminder of the deficiencies we have all over the pitch too.
Rugby Park is a stadium where we have struggled since Steve Clarke took charge. But Sunday’s performance was lacklustre, rudderless and lacking real leadership. It was also lacking some of our most vital players.

Allan McGregor was serving the second third of a three-match suspension for a kick-out at Marc McNulty.
James Tavernier, who Gerrard revealed had a knock, was given the day off.
Our Captain Fantastic has been a rock this season, and he probably deserved his day off.
Nikola Katic – who’s been on immense form recently – was given early leave to prepare for the U21 European Championships with Croatia. Similarly, the current man of the moment Scott Arfield was given time off to prepare for the Gold Cup with Canada.
Each of these players would’ve started on Sunday. But Rangers should still have a squad capable of beating Kilmarnock without them.
Yet, we don’t. And we’re actually a considerable distance away from it. We need upgrades, and we need more quality strength in depth.

That’s why the signings of Jones, Hastie and the yet to be announced Stewart are vital. We lack numbers on the fringes of our squad.
And not just that, the Kilmarnock result proved we really do lack quality strength in depth too.
