Rangers star Joe Aribo faces a tricky last 16 tie as his Nigeria side takes on Tunisia in the AFCON as the championship enters the knockout stage.
Nigeria qualified first place in their group with maximum points, seeing off Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea Bissau, scoring six goals and only conceding one as they have established themselves as one of the teams of the competition thus far.
Much was made of the opening match against Egypt as the two sides battled for supremacy of the group and it was the Super Eagles who emerged on top following a 1-0 victory. Rangers fans were delighted following Aribo’s assist for striker Kelechi Iheanacho to score the winner.
Joe Aribo is key for Nigeria as they chase glory
There was a slight worry amongst the Ibrox faithful as news came out saying Aribo was missing for the final group match due to an injury, but it was a false alarm as he was omitted with suspension fears as he had already picked up one caution already.
It turned out the side didn’t need him as they ran out comfortable 3-1 winners as they topped the group to set up a tie with a third-placed team.
The Super Eagles were unlucky to be pitted against Tunisia, who were strong favourites to win the group, in their last 16 tie. If they want to win a fourth title, they will have to defeat strong opponents along the way.
The path to glory has been eased somewhat as both Algeria and Ghana were eliminated at the group stage.
if Aribo and Nigeria can keep up these solid performances, then a fourth continental title could be heading the Super Eagles way.
Nigeria plays Tunisia on Sunday evening at 7 pm.
