Rangers fans “thank God” as club all but relegated from Premiership

Rangers fans are delighted to see the club lift their 55th title but some are also pleased to see one troublesome side all but relegated from the Scottish Premiership.

Hamilton Academical have proven a thorn in Rangers’ side in recent years – infamously beating the club 1-0 at Ibrox in March 2020 – but that’s not why fans are satisfied with their relegation.

Perhaps pleased is a strong word – Rangers fans know more than most the ignominy of relegation even it wasn’t on sporting merit – but Hamilton’s plastic pitch is a real bugbear for supporters.

Should Hamilton drop down to the Championship – which barring an 18-goal swing will happen this weekend – then they’ll take the plastic surface with them.

The likeable Brian Rice was left “devastated” in the aftermath of the 2-1 defeat to Ross County.

Kilmarnock could also be relegated via the Championship playoff unless results go in their favour on the final day.

This would see plastic surfaces drop from 3 to 1 in the topflight with Hearts the Championship winners and Dundee in pole position to enter the final playoff following a 3-0 win over Raith.

There’s been a long-running joke regarding Hamilton and their seven-year spell in the Scottish top tier, their miracle escapes the thing of legend.

But whilst Rangers fans might be sympathetic to the club going down, few will miss that dreaded surface in North Lanarkshire:

Whilst Hamilton fans mourn the losing of their Premiership status Gers supporters are in buoyant mood ahead of the club’s Trophy Day this weekend.

The Gers fans’ early celebrations even caught the eye of the club’s players who saluted supporters on social media for fireworks after the match.
