As Rangers were crowned Champions of Scotland South African international Bongani Zungu was part of a legendary squad who will always be remembered by Gers fans.

The midfielder struggled to make the sort of impact he’d like in Glasgow but even as the Amiens loanee returns to France, he’ll always be a part of the Invicible side which won 55.

A perennial substitute for Rangers who did start two of the club’s worst domestic results of the season, Zungu was clearly a likeable member of the squad and fit in at Ibrox.

But on the pitch things didn’t quite work out and this week – just days after celebrating 55 – Zungu headed back to France.

All parties will now move on but Zungu, 28, will have some particularly happy memories in Glasgow and some other ones which are not quite so memorable.

The midfielder made 22 appearances for Rangers – 17 from the bench – but his time in Glasgow was tinged by that Covid-19 breach which ended his season.

Zungu was the eldest of five players who broke lockdown rules to gather at a houseparty and this appeared to be the final nail in the coffin after he struggled to make a telling impact on the squad.

After the six-match bans were upheld, Zungu’s season was curtailed, but just before he was forced to the sidelines Zungu had somewhat redeemed himself in the eyes of supporters.

The midfielder was defiant in the face of disgusting racism aimed at teammate Glen Kamara from Slavia Prague defender Ondrej Kudela and stood up for his teammate at Ibrox.

Many Rangers fans have no hard feelings regarding Bongani’s time in Glasgow and they took to Twitter to wish the international midfielder all the best:

Rangers are the Invincible Champions of Scotland and this is a fact which hasn’t gone down too well with some people across the country.

The Gers are already reportedly looking at strengthening ahead of next season with the club reportedly making a bid in the region of £4m for another midfielder.
