Rangers are being linked with a £4.2m move for Swedish international Filip Helander who currently plies his trade with Serie A Bologna.

Swedish news outlet Sport Bladet is claiming that the player is “closing in” on the deal and there are only formalities left to tie up.

This backs up Steven Gerrard’s comments on signing an eighth player of the window this week [the Herald], with the Gers gaffer also suggesting it would be a centre back.

Needless to say, fans are getting themselves excited about the prospect of the player coming to the club for so much money.

A Serie A defender, whom admittedly we know little about, Rangers must be confident Helander can deliver if they’re about to splash out their most expensive fee in close to a decade on the player.

If the reported fee is correct, it’ll be the most we’ve splashed out since Croatian striker and fan favourite Nikica Jelavic joined from Rapid Vienna for £4m back in 2010.

The 26-year-old defender brings international pedigree and 10 caps to the Rangers squad as the club look to mount a serious title charge this campaign.

A statement signing from Rangers?

On paper, it looks like a statement of intent, especially with the fee attached to the player.

Rangers will certainly begin to boast real strength in depth at centre half now. The highly rated Connor Goldson was largely very consistent over 54 appearances for the club last season.

Fan favourite Nikola Katic, 22, and new signing George Edmundson, 21, are also solid options going into the new season.

But for the money quoted, you imagine that Connor Goldson and Filip Helander, should he join Rangers, will be the first choice centre backs this season.

Helander started his career with Malmo before moving to Hellas Verona in 2015.

A year later he moved to Bologna, originally on-loan, before joining permanently and going on to make over 60 appearances in Serie A.

The 6ft4 Scandinavian also went to the World Cup 2018 in Russia with the Swedish national team but he never played in the competition.
