Rangers fans lavish praise on Ibrox “legend” Alex McLeish on return

With a plethora of talent on the pitch at Ibrox for the legends match v Liverpool, you’d have been forgiven for thinking the appearance of Alex McLeish as Rangers manager might’ve taken a backseat.

The former Ibrox boss was back in the dugout after around 13 years to lead a side which had 20 former Rangers players – many of whom he managed – and of course Steven Gerrard.

Leading his side to a treble, Helicopter Sunday glory and seven trophies in total over some five years in charge at Ibrox, fans played testament to an Ibrox figure they’ll never forget.

Big Eck is clearly still well thought of at Ibrox and his presence at Saturday’s Rangers Legends match against Liverpool was superbly well received.

The legendary former Aberdeen and Scotland player took over at Rangers during a time of downscaling and still brought great success to Ibrox against a competitive Celtic side.

Best remembered for securing the club’s 50th league title on the final day back in 2003 and of course Helicopter Sunday in 2005, Alex McLeish spent five years at Ibrox between 2001 and 2006.

Big Eck won the Scottish Premier League with Rangers in 2003 and 2005, the Scottish Cup in 2002 and 2003, and the League Cup in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

McLeish also guided Rangers to the Champions League last 16 for the first and only time in 2006, making Rangers the first Scottish side to do so.

The former Scotland boss described returning to Ibrox as “emotional” and “nostalgic” to the club’s media department after the match [Rangers].

McLeish also revealed that he has been offered the chance to return to management [Herald] since controversially leaving his role as Scotland boss in April.
