Rangers fans have lauded James Tavernier underneath the skipper’s celebratory tweet, following the Round of 32 Europa League triumph over Braga.

The Gers won 1-0 in Portugal on Wednesday night, giving them a 4-2 victory on aggregate which saw them become the first team through to the last 16.

It was a stunning performance away from home which sat in stark contrast to Sunday’s 2-2 draw at St Johnstone in the league.

Individuals such as George Edmundson and Scott Arfield were singled out for big praise, but it was a superb collective effort and Tavernier was a part of that.

The skipper is fully up to speed again after a minor appendix operation delayed his start to 2020, and he led the side admirably.

The defensive lapses that marred what had been an otherwise superb first half of the season for Tavernier appear to be a thing of the past, as he teamed up with Edmundson, Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic and Allan McGregor to keep the hosts at bay.

While he did surge down the right flank on occasion, there was a discipline to his performance befitting of the occasion and the clean sheet is a just reward.

Following the game, he tweeted a pair of pictures accompanied by a caption in which his pride shone through: “What a feeling. What a night. What a team. What a following.”

Unsurprisingly, the message went down well with supporters. Tavernier’s post received over ten thousand likes and hundreds of supportive comments.
