Rangers fans have lauded the Celtic supporters responsible for the creation of a banner at Parkhead which pays tribute to the victims of the Ibrox Disaster.
Saturday is 50 years to the day since 66 Rangers supporters tragically lost their lives at an Old Firm game at Ibrox.
It was one of the darkest days in the history of British football and many tributes will be paid to the victims across the weekend.
The Old Firm rivalry runs deep, but after journalist Anthony Joseph shared a picture on Twitter of a banner unveiled at Parkhead, plenty of Rangers fans praised the Celtic supporters behind the gesture.
“Ibrox Disaster 1971,” reads the banner. “We remember and pray for the victims and their families.”
Steven Gerrard paid tribute to the victims during his pre-match press conference on Friday and said that although a full service would not be possible due to Covid-19 restrictions, everyone at the club would still be paying their respects to those involved in the disaster [Rangers.co.uk].
Rangers have changed the club crest on their social media platforms to a special logo which features the date of the disaster and the words ‘always remembered’.
Gers chairman Douglas Park and a number of current players featured in a special video released on Saturday morning, and the RangersTV coverage of the Old Firm will begin earlier than usual due to additional content which will mark the anniversary.
