Rangers fans commend Partick Thistle but split over proposed SPFL snub

Rangers fans have been commending Partick Thistle for snubbing the SPFL and SFA ahead of the club’s League One trophy presentation.

Jags manager Ian McCall made the announcement on BBC Sportsound this week as he railed against the footballing authorities for their conduct at the end of last season.

Partick Thistle were unarguably the most hard done by as the infamous end of season voting debacle saw them relegated from the Championship despite being two points adrift with a game in hand.

This situation was made even worse by the conduct of the SPFL and the mysterious changed Dundee vote which came with the promise of glamour friendlies with one club in particular.

There’s a sentiment in Scottish football that clubs were hamstrung with SPFL finances into voting for the season-ending proposals, which ultimately awarded Celtic the Scottish Premiership trophy.

That feeling that the SPFL rushed through the proposals to largely suit one team – even if the likes of Dundee United benefitted from promotion as a result – remains throughout Scottish football.

But for Partick Thistle their gripes remain firmly with the authorities and they are now taking a stand against them on the day they pick up a well-earned League One title.

“The club and me were in complete agreement,” said McCall.

“Nobody from the SPFL or SFA will be allowed in the stadium. They’re not allowed in the stadium, simple as that.

“What happened to our club was just wrong.”

Hearts were another club who experienced wrongdoing as a result of the vote as they were relegated to the Scottish Championship.

However, they too have bounced back as title winners and after fan campaigns to leave the trophy on the podium celebrations were particularly subdued as they received the award.

Rangers fans – many still reeling at the Celtic-centric behaviour of the authorities – are asking the question over whether the Ibrox club should do the same as Partick Thistle on May 15th:

Rangers fans are gearing up for an almighty party on May the 15th as the club lifts the Scottish Premiership trophy.

Just in time for the club lifting the prize, Glasgow City Council have conveniently got to work on some overdue repairs which also act as a roadblock.
