Council roadworks set up Ibrox blockade in time for Rangers’ Trophy Day

Glasgow City Council have – rather conveniently – begun roadworks on Edmiston Drive outside Ibrox Stadium which prevent cars driving by Rangers’ famous main stand.

Supporters can still access the car-park at Ibrox in order to get into the ground and to the Rangers Store but there will only be entrance and one exit as the famous road is closed off.

The works began on the 26th of April and will continue for a period of four weeks, bringing them up to the 24th of May.

Conveniently, this means the works will be taking place during Rangers’ trophy day celebrations and they will – at the very least – prevent cars driving by the stadium on the 15th of May.

Rangers are set to play Aberdeen at Ibrox that day and there is expected to be joyous scenes around the city of Glasgow and Scotland as the club get their hands on the trophy.

Cynics amongst the support will believe the Council’s decision to begin the works on these dates is engineered to supress any celebrations at Ibrox Stadium.

But it is true that the road at Edmiston Drive is in need of repair and is long overdue some attention from the Council.

Rangers fans were berated by the Scottish Government in March for breaking national lockdown rules to celebrate the club becoming Champions.

Over-zealous government figures described the scenes as “disgraceful” and “shameful” despite the fact no Covid-19 outbreaks were linked to the parties.

Rangers themselves were also a target for the government but the club has – to our knowledge – received no apology from the authorities for their reaction to the celebrations.
