Rangers women defeated Hearts 6-0 in a stunning rout that kept the side’s hopes of winning a historic first-ever SWPL title alive.

After beating Aberdeen 2-0 at Pittodrie last week to move into the top spot in the league table, the thrashing of Hearts consolidated their position, with a two-point gap between first and second as the Gers have a game in hand too.

It only took a minute to open the scoring, with Kirsty Howat netting before further goals from Ciara Grant and Megan Bell gave the club an unsurmountable advantage at the interval.

Another three goals followed in the second half at the training centre by Bell, Elizabeth Arnot, and Brogan Hay continued their excellent league form and gives them a major advantage in the title race.

The closest the side has gotten to winning the SWPL title was a runners-up spot in 2014, as Glasgow City has won the previous 14 titles and this impressive run could shortly be coming to an end.

Malky Thomson praised the side following the performance and was happy with the positivity surrounding the squad.

“I’m really delighted with everything about the squad just now, I think today’s performance just shows how far they’ve come. It’s really kicked on,” said Thomson [Rangers].

“I’m really pleased with the amount of positivity that was in the squad prior to the game, the way that they are going about it is nothing short of being professional.

Hopefully, the team can carry on this wonderful league run and claim their maiden title as it would be a historic achievement, not just winning the league but ending Glasgow City’s dominance.

Meanwhile, a Rangers legend has accused the club of lacking respect following the legends game.
