Rangers duo spotted back in training ahead of BVB clash after absences

Rangers duo Leon Balogun and Jon McLaughlin were both spotted back in training on Wednesday ahead of the high-profile Europa League clash against Borussia Dortmund at Ibrox.

Balogun missed the first leg of the knockout round playoff as well as matches against Annan Athletic and Dundee United after sustaining a minor muscle injury against Hibernian earlier this month.

Meanwhile, McLaughlin has been absent from Rangers’ last two matchday squads due to a virus.

Balogun declared himself fit in Wednesday’s pre-BVB press conference, though, and McLaughlin’s return to the training pitch suggests he’s also back available.

Both players featured in a training gallery and Balogun featured in a teaser for a RangersTV training video shared by the club on Wednesday evening.

Only Nigeria international Balogun is likely to start the match, slotting in at centre-back alongside Connor Goldson.

Calvin Bassey may still keep his place in the starting XI, but would shift to left-back with Borna Barisic dropping out of the team.

Allan McGregor, whose form has improved recently, is a shoo-in between the sticks, though, so McLaughlin is only likely to be named on the bench.

The 34-year-old has kept a remarkable 18 clean sheets in 25 appearances for Rangers since joining in the summer of 2020 and he was rewarded with a new contract last month.

However, he’ll have to wait until McGregor hangs up his gloves before he gets a crack at being Rangers number one.

Meanwhile, Rangers have responded on Twitter after Jude Bellingham’s first impressions of Ibrox were caught on camera.
