Danny Rohl may not be the most popular person inside the Rangers dressing room with all the players.

The German has had clashes with James Tavernier over the defender’s final Ibrox game, but there are others, too, who do not look favourably on the manager.

Rohl, however, will have the final say with regard to their futures as he has been backed by the owners to make major decisions over incomings and outgoings this summer.

Derek Cornelius breaks silence on his falling out with Danny Rohl

Derek Cornelius will not play for Rangers again following his loan spell, and he explained why he did not feature for the club since November.

The Canada centre-back was ruled out with an injury, but despite returning to training and representing his national team, he was not reintegrated into the matchday squad by Rohl.

In his view, the German’s treatment was disrespectful as he believed that he could be a valuable player for the Light Blues.

He did not start Tavernier in his final Ibrox game…

Cornelius revealed that he was not given any reason by Rohl as to why he would not be playing, and also claimed that the Gers boss told him that he would not play again until the end of the season.

Speaking to TSN, Cornelius said: “I felt very disrespected. I said [to Rangers], ‘I can help this team.’ In some way, whether that’s starting, whether it’s five minutes to hold on to a lead, whether that’s having a conversation with a guy – a younger player – saying, ‘Don’t worry about the pressure, just focus on your job.’ Whatever [role].

“I think I came back into team training maybe twice or so, and then after the second training, I was called to [Rohl’s] office, and he basically just told me, ‘From now until the end of the season, you’re not going to be part of the squad.’ And I just felt that was really unfair. I felt like I deserved the opportunity to work my way back into the team.

“I wasn’t given a solid reason.

“It was tough. It was really tough. I was hoping the situation would change. Maybe if [Rohl] sees the way I’ve been training for the last two, three weeks, he could have changed his mind, but it wasn’t the case, and it’s honestly disappointing. I honestly feel like we had enough talent and enough ability to go on and win a title.”

Did Rangers make a mistake by not picking Cornelius in the second half of the season?

Based on his comments, Cornelius did seem to have the hunger and willingness to play for the club, but was not allowed to by the manager.

Prior to his injury, Rohl selected him, and not only was he starting games, but he was also playing the full 90 minutes.

Nasser Djiga and Emmanuel Fernandez eventually became the go-to centre-back pairing, with John Souttar stepping in as the deputy.

While the duo did achieve some success together, they also made quite a few errors, and having another centre-back in the fold could have helped the Light Blues during a title charge.

It remains to be seen how Cornelius does in his career, but there certainly will be many fans who will wonder why he didn’t get the chances he desired.
