Rangers have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of Wednesday’s clash with St Mirren after Gary McAllister ruled both Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack out of the Premiership fixture [Official Rangers Twitter].

Arfield had to be helped from the Ibrox pitch on Boxing Day just six minutes after coming on as a substitute, after picking up an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Jack has been out since sustaining what was initially thought to be a minor knock during the 4-0 home win over Aberdeen in November.

“Scott Arfield is on his way to get a scan and we are awaiting results,” said McAllister [Official Rangers Twitter]. “It was disappointing to see him leave the pitch and hopeful the scan is not too bad.”

“We are still going to have to be patient with Ryan Jack.”

It’s a big blow for the Gers to be without the midfielders, who are both now extremely doubtful for Saturday’s Old Firm.

Arfield has been a standout performer so far this season, scoring seven times and registering five assists from 31 appearances in all competitions, while Scotland international Jack is set to miss his eleventh game in a row.

The injuries leave Steven Gerrard with just four senior midfielders – Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo and Bongani Zungu – to fill three starting spots amid a congested period.

The news increases the likelihood that Zungu will be handed a first Premiership start against the Buddies and he’s raring to go ahead of the game.
