If Kent goes then Rangers should swoop for former Hibs star

Rangers could do a lot worse than go for Brandon Barker

If Ryan Kent is to leave Rangers in the summer and stay down south, Rangers could do worse than go for Manchester City’s Brandon Barker.

Kent is only on loan at Ibrox until the end of the season. Fans have been extremely impressed by the English winger, and the chances of him being signed up long term are up in the air. There’s no denying he would be an exciting prospect, but he’s still to prove himself further in Scotland.

Of course, being aware of the fact this is all down to Kent not working out, Barker would provide real dynamism.

At Hibernian, he proved himself to be a star and extremely capable of playing north of the border. Kent has showed flashes in his short time at Gers so far, and Barker has that same explosiveness to his game. During his spell at Hibs, he made 30 appearances and was the Leith side’s star man.

For those who can bring themselves to look back, he destroyed James Tavernier in the 5-5 draw at Easter Road. Tav’s best trait certainly isn’t his defending, but Barker showed such pace and directness. That was the one thing that Rangers particularly lacked in the 1-0 loss to Livingston on Sunday.

At the moment, Barker is on-loan at Preson North End in England’s Championship. He’s already netted twice in his opening 10 appearances for the club, and has solidified himself as first-choice winger.

Would he be interested?

Luring him back up the road could be a real challenge. The idea of playing under a footballing legend in Steven Gerrard could be enough to sway him, however. The only real roadblock here if Gers do plan a bid is whether he’s a success at Preston or not.

So far, Barker has started extremely well. The winger is impressing many in the Championship, and a good campaign will open up a world of opportunities for him. Therefore, in that respect, Rangers may have already missed their chance with him.

But the fact is that Barker certainly isn’t going to be getting involved with Man City anytime soon. The winger has plenty of talent, but not Man City talent. He’ll become an avaiulable acquisition if Rangers want him in the summer, but how in-demand he’ll be remains a mystery.

Kent could, and hopefully will, turn out to be a star at Ibrox. But that could mean he heads back down the road to find a Premier League or Championship opportunity.

If Kent does go down the road for whatever reason, Barker should be on Rangers’ wishlist.
