Former Slovakian international defender Martin Skrtel is “close” to signing a deal with Rangers, according to two separate reports in Turkey.
The 34-year-old centre half would represent a strange signing for Steven Gerrard’s men given the immense strength in depth that the Ibrox club have in the position.
But according to Turkish outlets Fanatik and Miliyet, Skrtel is closing in on becoming the Rangers boss’ ninth signing of the transfer window.

The stories have been picked up by the likes of Football Scotland, but Rangers fans will remain dubious over this move until something official comes from the club.
The reports follow on from the
editor of Turkish football outlet Fotomac suggesting Rangers had held a meeting with Skrtel last month.
Skrtel himself said in July his representatives had met with Rangers with a view to a move [Daily Record].
A former teammate of Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, Skrtel is a vastly experienced centre-half and would offer something different from what we have right now.
But with Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, George Edmundson and
£3m [RangersTV] man Filip Helander already in the side, it’s incredibly difficult to see where Skrtel fits in.
Especially on the type of wages the player could demand.

Supporters remain incredibly sceptical over any move for Skrtel and will be waiting patiently to see if it comes to fruition.
In the meantime, the club needs to sign two players in different positions if we’re to compete for the league title this season.
