Rangers captain James Tavernier has reiterated the “stay at home” message to supporters ahead of next weekend’s Old Firm derby.
The upcoming Celtic Park clash was cast into doubt as a result of the Scottish Government reaction to Rangers fans celebrating the club’s iconic 55th title victory.
Following the scenes at Ibrox Stadium and in George Square a flyer began circulating asking for Celtic fans to come out in numbers at their home ground ahead of the clash.
Since then the conversation has centred around the messaging from clubs with Rangers releasing a statement following the meeting with key stakeholders – including Celtic – lauding the “very productive” conversation [Rangers].
James Tavernier has come out to reiterate this “clear and unequivocal” message ahead of the match via the club’s official social media channels.
“I want to send a message for all Rangers fans. Thank you for you support over the last week,” said Tavernier [Rangers].
“We have another huge week ahead, the second on Thursday the the Old Firm at Parkhead on Sunday.
“As captain of Rangers it is a huge privilege to represent the best fans in the world. I want to highlight how important it is for you to all stay at home next weekend.
“Please don’t gather in crowds especially near the city centre or the stadium.
“We want nothing more than to have you with us next Sunday but we know you are right behind us.
“The best place to support us is from home. Stay home, stay safe.”
This is sensible messaging but to most supporters it should be ridiculously obvious – do not approach Celtic Park or gather in the city centre prior to next week’s Old Firm.
But this situation certainly is not the same as the club’s historic title win, which seen supporters pour into the streets.
Rangers can enjoy the fact we’re going to waltz into enemy territory as Champions and with the chance to win a third Old Firm in a row at Celtic Park.
The Ibrox club’s messaging regarding the upcoming match has been considerably more classy than their Celtic rivals, who couldn’t resist lame digs at last week’s celebrations.
