Rangers captain James Tavernier has been discussing his side’s exceptional clean sheet record this season after the latest blank in the club’s 1-0 win over Kilmarnock.

The Ibrox legions believe that the hard-fought win at Killie is evidence that the club is turning a corner this season with much of Rangers’ early success down to their defensive solidity.

In 18 games this season – of which Rangers have won 16 – the Ibrox club has kept 15 clean sheets.

It’s an extraordinary record and one which captain Tav – who plays on the right-hand side of defence – claims the team is very proud of.

“We are delighted to get the three points. That was, first and foremost, our objective coming here today,” said Tavernier [Rangers].

“We are delighted as well to have 15 clean sheets now.

“It is something the lads are proud of – we know it wasn’t our best performance today but we saw it over the line and put three points on the board.

“We have great pride in it (clean sheet record) and we worked hard on it in pre-season as a defensive unit and as a team.

“So it is something we take great belief in and we always want to come into games and try to get clean sheets and we have got to continue to work hard on it and stop the other team get chances.”

Such has been the success of the Rangers defence in the early part of this season the club has only conceded four goals all season across three matches.

The Gers defence leaked a double against Hibs whilst Scottish Premiership rivals Motherwell managed one goal, as did Turkish giants Galatasaray in the Europa League.

Rangers also started the season with seven straight Scottish Premiership clean sheets, shattering a record which was previously held by rivals Celtic for 114 years.
