Rangers could break a 20-year-old clean sheet world record against rivals Celtic should they continue to keep clean sheets up until the Parkhead clash in mid-October – but there’s a catch.

The Ibrox side smashed the 114-year-old Scottish record for the most clean sheets at the start of a league season in the 4-0 win over Dundee United, making it seven games without shipping a single goal.

In doing so Rangers also beat Chelsea’s English record of six games without conceding back in 2005/06.

Steven Gerrard’s side are now only two games away from matching the European record set by the famous Ajax side of 1994/5 who went nine games without conceding.

They can match this record if they manage shut-outs in two tough ties away to Hibernian and Motherwell.

Should Rangers also keep a clean sheet against Ross County they will match the current world record.

According to the Daily Record, this was set by Tunisian side Esperance and was created 20 years ago.

The African side began their domestic season with 10 clean sheets before eventually conceding to US Monastir.

However, Rangers obviously harbour big ambitions to reach the Europa League group stages and the Ross County match is currently scheduled the day after the Playoff Round fixture.

Rangers are expected to get past Lincoln Red Imps and either Willem II or old foes Progres in order to reach this stage of the competition.

At the moment the Gers are scheduled to play Ross County in their 10th Scottish Premiership tie of the season on the 2nd of October, with Playoff round qualifiers scheduled for the 1st.

If the Ross County match is rearranged (as is likely) Rangers will instead be given the opportunity to match the world record at Parkhead on 17th October.

Either way – be it to match a record or set it – it adds an extra dimension to the first Old Firm game of the season should Rangers force shut-outs in their next few Scottish Premiership matches.
