Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed the details of a mystery injury which has been plaguing veteran Ibrox striker Jermain Defoe.

The 38-year-old forward has sat out the matchday squad in the last two games with the only insight being Ian Crocker claiming the forward was carrying a muscle knock in Sky Sports’ coverage of the 1-0 win over Hibs.

But as Gerrard previewed the match against Hamilton this weekend, he also gave some detail of the injury to Jermain Defoe, revealing the striker is suffering from a calf problem.

“No fresh issues from Wednesday night,” said Gerrard [Rangers].

“Jermain Defoe won’t make the weekend; he’s got as a calf issue but should be back with us sometime next week leading into Kilmarnock but it’s as it was besides that.”

Rangers star Defoe had been an ever present in Steven Gerrard’s matchday squad up until the Hibs game but he’s found chances limited in a competitive side this season.

Defoe has netted four goals in 11 appearances this season, despite making seven of those appearances from the bench.

Given the additions of Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten it was always going to be difficult for the striker to get regular minutes this season but he still has plenty to contribute.

His record even since joining Rangers is very impressive, the legendary striker netting 29 goals and laying on 10 assists in 63 games for the club to date.

Rangers could be without one striker in the matches to come after Kemar Roofe was cited for a challenge in the St. Johnstone match, much to the ire of Gers supporters.
