Rangers boss’ old rival and teammate tipped for extraordinary Celtic move

A long-term former rival and international teammate of Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been tipped to sensationally take the Celtic job should Neil Lennon be relieved of his duties.

Celtic find themselves 21 points behind in the title race with a rampant Rangers showing no signs of flinching as they rock to a legendary 55^th title, a trophy which would be their first in a decade.

There is much talk of a restructuring job at Celtic with one pundit claiming they could potentially go down Rangers’ route of globally renowned ex-professional and snare Wayne Rooney.

The ex-Manchester United striker is an old foe of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard whilst the pair played together many times for the England national team, club loyalties die hard.

Currently the caretaker manager of Derby County, talkSPORT host Jason Cundy has tipped known Celtic fan Rooney to be tempted by a move north of the border.

“Last year Rangers imploded but this year there’s not even a title race,” said Cundy [talkSPORT SportsBar 12/01/21].

“Rangers have had a brilliant start this season and continue to do so – Steven Gerrard is making a right name for himself.

“I’m guessing he’ll (Gerrard) want to finish whatever job he started, whether that’s back-to-back titles (or Champions League).

“It will be interesting to see who takes the Celtic job beacuse I can’t see Lennon hanging on after this season.

“I just wonder who might be tempted up there, because what Steven Gerrard has done, Wayne Rooney for example, Frank Lampard after he’s won the title (audible laughing).

“Steven Gerrard has gone up there and made a name for himself.”

Whilst there’s no official suggestion Rooney is a target for the Parkhead club the potential rivalry between the two is a mouthwatering prospect.

There won’t be many Rangers fans who’d mind this appointment either with Gerrard undertaking a rebuilding job upon arrival whilst Rooney would be expected to deliver straight away.

The Rangers support is in buoyant mood after Celtic dropped another two points in the title race with the gap between the two sides now 21 points.
