Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is one of five managers named on a shortlist to replace Jose Mourinho at Spurs by the Telegraph.

The Ibrox gaffer has made a big impression on the British game by restoring Rangers to former glories and leading the sleeping giant to their first league title in a decade.

The Gers manager and his team have already cemented themselves in history in a season which could get even better yet but unfortunately, success comes with its own issues.

One of the biggest of these are continuing reports from down south linking Steven Gerrard with the Ibrox exit door.

Liverpool is the obvious link – especially given the woeful form of Jurgen Klopp’s side this season – but everyone involved in that dynamic has moved to quash talk of the German’s exit and Gerrard’s subsequent return to Anfield [BT Sport].

A crashing exit to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League where they blew a 2-0 lead from the first leg, a 3-1 weekend defeat to Manchester United, and a current 7th placed standing in the Premier League are cranking up the pressure on Mourinho.

Gerrard has previously been linked to the role – admittedly by 90min.com – and it’s easy to see why.

Spurs are a sleeping giant in their own right and either under Mourinho or predecessor Pochettino they haven’t quite made it work on domestic soil.

The Telegraph report names Gerrard as “the homegrown talent” option for Spurs with Julian Nagelsmann, Massimiliano Allegri, Michael Carrick , and Diego Simeone the other four options.

It’s not bad company to keep.

There’s no immediate suggestion Jose is about to be shunted out the New White Hart Lane door – or that Spurs are willing to front the £30m the Telegraph claim it will take to do so.

But the fact Gerrard’s hat is reportedly in the ring speaks volume of both the respect he commands down south and the job he’s done in Glasgow.

Rangers boss Gerrard has repeatedly reiterated his commitment to Rangers and has previously claimed fans have nothing to worry about in the “short term” regarding his future”.
