Rangers boss Gerrard makes Dunfermline lineup prediction after Malmo shocker

Steven Gerrard has predicted that he’ll tweak the lineup that lost to Malmo but won’t make ‘drastic’ changes to his Rangers side for Friday evening’s Premier Sports Cup clash against Dunfermline [RangersTV].

Rangers were embarrassed at Ibrox on Tuesday night, exiting Champions League qualifying at the hands of a side ranked 36 places below them in the UEFA club coefficient, despite the visitors playing a half with ten men.

Few players delivered performances worthy of pass marks, with Rangers all over the place at both ends of the pitch in the second 45 minutes.

Fans weren’t happy with Gerrard’s decision to drop Filip Helander for Leon Balogun, while Ryan Kent was one of the individuals to be singled out for criticism by pundits.

However, the manager says that while he intends to freshen the side up against the Pars, he won’t make a huge number of alterations.

“We’ll prepare in the best way we can,” said Gerrard [RangersTV]. “I’ll make some changes for Friday night but I’ll still be trying to pick a team that has matchwinners on the pitch, so there won’t be drastic changes.”

“We’ll pick an XI to try and get the job done and move into the next round of that competition.”

Rangers’ Champions League failure has increased the pressure on Gerrard to deliver domestically this season, with fans hungry for cup as well as Premiership success.

The League Cup and Scottish Cup have both proven elusive to the 41-year-old so far and to an extent, that has been accepted by the fanbase. However, a defeat on Friday would be disastrous.

Perhaps fortunately, Dunfermline haven’t started their season well either, with the promotion-fancied Championship side losing 3-0 at home to Partick Thistle at the weekend.

Gerrard won’t be taking them lightly, though, and while players like Steven Davis, who have played every match to date, may drop out, the likes of Ianis Hagi, Kemar Roofe and summer signing Fashion Sakala could be set for some much-needed game time.

Roofe missed Rangers’ last domestic fixture at Dundee United on Saturday due to a family emergency but posted a heartwarming update on Instagram on Tuesday.
