Steven Gerrard has praised in-form Rangers midfielder Steven Davis for returning from lockdown in ‘unbelievable’ condition but he skirted around a question regarding the player’s Ibrox future [RangersTV].
Davis was outstanding in the Gers’ 3-3 Europa League draw with Benfica in Lisbon on Thursday night, earning rave reviews from supporters.
The 35-year-old created the chance that led to Nicolas Otamendi’s red card, played a key role in his side’s first goal and recorded an impressive pass completion percentage of 94.1 across the match [WhoScored.com].
Gerrard was full of praise when asked to comment on the Northern Ireland captain’s form but didn’t confirm whether or not he was looking to extend Davis’ contract beyond the end of the current season.
“I think about my players non-stop, every minute of every day – all of them, as a collective,” he said, as captured by RangersTV. “There are certain individuals that are up at the end of the season and when the time is right we’ll discuss their futures with them in private. Then, if there’s any news on an individual’s situation, we’ll update you.”
“Steven’s in good form. I think he has been since we returned from lockdown. You always wonder when players are that age and they have such a long break off with a lockdown, what are they going to be like when they return?
“But his professionalism and his attitude and his application – he came back in unbelievable shape and he’s built on that. I think that’s showing in his performances. He’s really really consistent at the moment and arguably in the best form since we’ve been working together.”

Davis is the oldest regular starter in the Rangers XI with the exception of the goalkeeper, Allan McGregor, but his performances so far this season show he’s still got plenty to offer.
His playing style has evolved in recent years and he’s perhaps lost a yard of pace, but his fitness, vision and quality are all still there.
Gerrard has no shortage of midfielders to call upon right now and holding back on contract negotiations ensures that those who are coming to the end of their deals will stay motivated across the season.
Yet, if Davis continues to produce at his current level, there’s little doubt he’ll eventually be offered an extension.
