Rangers are reportedly battling Celtic for the signature of former Europa League foe and Rapid Vienna midfielder Dejan Ljubicic.

The Old Firm duo will also have to fend off interest from Championship Brentford and Premier League Southampton, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

This report also claims there is interest in the Austrian U-21 international from Germany and Russia and that he will cost £2m to sign from the Wien-based club.

The 22-year-old is described as a holding midfielder with a good passing range who reads the game well and has also been utilised as a centre-half.

Midfielder Ljubicic will be well aware of Rangers after playing the full 90-minutes of the Austrian side’s 3-1 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox in 2018.

Touted for a move to the MLS in January, the midfielder’s career has been rejuvenated since the restart and is now being talked up for call-up to the main Austrian national team.

Ljubicic isn’t the only Austrian player who has been linked with a move to Ibrox in recent weeks either.

But Rangers look set to miss out on Clermont striker Adrian Grbic who is reportedly on the verge of a £9m move to Ligue 1 Brest [MaLigue2].
