QPR could launch January move for Rangers linked Shankland - report

The Scottish Sun reports that QPR are ‘mulling over’ a potential January transfer swoop for Rangers linked striker Lawrence Shankland.

The Dundee United marksman has 22 goals in 24 appearances for club and country so far this season, following on from a rampant 2018/19 campaign, during which he netted 34 times for Ayr United.

Both Rangers and Celtic reportedly scouted the 24-year-old earlier in the campaign [Daily Record] and it seems the ailing EFL Championship side, managed by former Gers boss Mark Warburton, are now also interested.

It’s claimed that QPR’s Director of Football, Les Ferdinand, attended the Dundee derby on Friday evening to watch Shankland, who played the full 90 minutes of the 1-1 draw.

Given Shankland’s incredible lower league goalscoring record over the last few seasons, it’s no surprise bigger clubs are having a look at him.

However, it seems unlikely that he’ll be moving anywhere in the winter window.

The forward only joined the Tangerines over the summer, penning a three-year contract [DundeeUnitedFC.co.uk]. Therefore, his current club have control over his future.

Given that the central aim of their season is to gain promotion back to the Premiership and that Shankland is their main source of goals, it would be risky to let him go at this stage, even though they already hold a sizeable lead at the top of the Championship table.

If the Gers are going to move for a lower league striker any time soon, it seems more likely it would be Kevin Nisbet.

Just 22, Nisbet is younger and has 13 goals in his last nine appearances, while crucially, his manager has already stated that Dunfermline wouldn’t get in the player’s way if a big transfer move came his way.
