Pundit noticed something at Ibrox during Rangers vs Kilmarnock that ‘tells a story’

Rangers fans were reinvigorated by what they saw from the team last night.

Philippe Clement put out a Gers team full of attacking intent and that translated into the performance as they rattled six goals past a “spooked” Kilmarnock side.

The home side were relentless in and out of possession, pressing to win the ball back and then attacking aggressively when they had it – exactly what is expected of them at Ibrox.

It makes it a run of three good wins in the space of a week which lifts some of the pressure that had been piling on Clement.

A different Rangers performance

It was a performance that has been labelled Rangers’ best of the season as they matched the thumping of Ross County from early in the campaign.

Former Gers striker Billy Dodds was impressed with what he was seeing and has urged the manager and team to keep it up.

Asked on BBC Sportsound to identify if there was anything different from what had gone before, he explained: “Pace, tempo, aggression. Rangers had that tonight and really got on the front foot.

“And they had the right personnel to break Kilmarnock down. But they kept going at it as well.

“Then they got the confidence and they scored brilliant second half goals. Really good play.

“Rangers were right at it, set the bar for where they have to be. Especially at home when teams sit in.”

Rangers fan reaction told a story

Something that the fans did during the game told Dodds a significant story.

There have been times where the Light Blues have only led by a narrow 1-0 at half time that there fans have not been content with the performance and showed it.

But this time they stuck with the team and showed their approval because of the intent they were seeing on the pitch.

Asked if he thinks the performance and result will bring respite for Clement, he went on: “I do. But they’ve got to keep going. They’ve got to realise what’s going to win games, especially at home when teams sit in.

“They must play the right personnel and they must go about it in the right manner.

“Even though they were only 1-0 that told me the story where at half-time the fans realised they’re only up 1-0 but they were constant in their pressure and then when they got the ball they were as quick as I’ve ever seen.

“Wait until you see the first goal – quick throw-in, Hagi puts a brilliant cross in and Tavernier scores at the back post.

“That’s all the Rangers fans want when they’re trying to chase down Celtic and Aberdeen.

“And if they get that they’ll accept a 0-0 at half-time or a 1-0. And they got clapped off, they never got on their back all night.

“Whereas if you go about it with that slow tempo at home when you’re on the chase against those two teams and things don’t go your way, then the fans let you know about it. The fans stayed with them tonight.

“They loved the performance, they got a standing ovation and that’s the bar set now.”
