Powerful Rangers defender Jack Simpson has been snapped in training as a first-ever Old Firm appearance beckons for the winter signing [Rangers.co.uk].

The Gers are taking on Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon in the fifth and final derby of the season and Simpson is almost certain to make the starting XI.

With Leon Balogun missing several recent matches through injury and Steven Gerrard confirming on Friday that Filip Helander is likely to miss the rest of the season with a problem of his own [RangersTV], Simpson is the only senior centre-back left to partner Connor Goldson.

The 24-year-old has only made four appearances since signing from Bournemouth on deadline day and has looked a little shaky so far.

He’s got all the attributes to be a big success at Ibrox, though.

Simpson is powerful, relatively quick and he has the ability to bring the ball out from the back.

Perhaps he needs a start in a big game to make him really feel part of the project and that opportunity is set to arrive this weekend.

The 6ft 2″ defender looked in good spirits in training on Friday, as he and most other members of the first-team squad were snapped preparing for the fixture.

The Gers are unbeaten in Old Firms so far this season, winning three and drawing the other, conceding just one goal across the four fixtures.

That’s an outstanding defensive record and one Simpson will no doubt be determined to protect.

He may be targeted by the Hoops on Sunday but even if he is, it will provide a great chance for him to show what he’s capable of.
