Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was very open about the expected transfer activity at Ibrox heading into the international break.
Whilst this has been a particularly challenging transfer window for clubs across football, Rangers have done well to recruit quality options which bulk out a squad found wanting when they ran out of steam last season.
Ianis Hagi, Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey, Leon Balogun, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten have all improved the squad as Rangers follow through on their promise of adding quality.
Speaking after the Hamilton match Gerrard admitted he expects some activity during the next few weeks and there are still two main positions in the squad which require attention.
The most well publicised of this has been in the midfield, where Gerrard has made no bones about trying to find a body for the “engine room”.
Rangers are on the hunt for a powerful, energetic midfielder with an eye for a pass and an eye for goal – it’s just a shame so are every single team in world football.
The likes of John Lundstram and Bongani Zungu have been linked but so far, nothing has got over the line.
The proposed move for Zungu is one shrouded in mystery with conflicting reports about the deals collapse amid an alleged £3.8m bid.
There’s also an argument that we’re a little light behind the forward, despite Kemar Roofe’s flexibility.
Should Rangers lose Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi or Joe Aribo to a long-term injury it would stand as a serious blow to the side.
Whilst Brandon Barker has emerged as a decent option – if not somewhat lacking in confidence – this may be one area the club could look at.
The likes of Danish winger Andreas Skov Olsen has been linked in the past and a fervent, young talent like this who has a point to prove might be the perfect option to bulk out this position.
Elsewhere Rangers look particularly well-stocked, with the club’s defenders earning massive plaudits for Rangers’ strongest ever defensive start to a Scottish topflight season.
This has been helped by the addition of Leon Balogun, who in early part of the season looked a top signing before Filip Helander slotted right back in after the Nigerian picked up an injury.
Jon McLaughlin too has been an inspired signing between the sticks and is now staking a very strong claim to the Ibrox number one jersey.
Rangers very much feel like they’re approaching their full complement but much of the club’s next flurry of transfer activity could come down to one man currently at Ibrox.
The future of Alfredo Morelos remains the topic of much discussion with even Steven Gerrard remaining tight-lipped and Rangers refusing to budge on an asking price amid interest from Lille.
Should Rangers recoup close to the £20m they reportedly want for the Colombian then this cash injection may well be the catalyst for the club pouncing on their primary targets during the break.
Even if it means we’ve also got to replace last season’s top scorer too.
