Popular former Rangers star Andy Halliday has given his verdict on bluenose Scotland striker Oli McBurnie’s response to criticism from outspoken pundit Michael Stewart.

McBurnie – who is yet to score in 13 appearances for his country – has come in for a lot of criticism concerning his performances in dark blue.

That includes from outspoken pundit Michael Stewart, who is not the most popular man at Rangers and is widely considered to be overly critical in his analysis of the club.

Stewart claimed McBurnie is “simply not good enough” for the country before the £20m Sheffield United striker replied in the early hours of Friday morning.

McBurnie, 24, played his part in firing Scotland to the Euros, netting one of the penalties in the 5-4 shootout win over Serbia which took Scotland to their first tournament in 22 years.

The striker would then reply, calling Stewart a “helmet” in the early hours of Friday morning before later deleting the tweet.

But that wasn’t before Hearts man Halliday caught wind of the comment and he was quick to point it out on a bumper episode of this week’s Open Goal.

“[Scotland qualified] after two days on the lash as well,” said Halliday.

“I think McBurnie took it a wee bit [too far with the drink]. He had a few more and I think he ended up on Twitter or something.”

Si Ferry then responded by saying, “he called Mikey Stewart a helmet”.

There have been a number of complaints about the criticism of the striker, with much of it online being directed from Celtic supporting Scotland fans.

Rangers supporters have leapt to the forward’s defence with many believing he gets a harsher deal because of his very public support of Rangers.
