Florian Kamberi, who labelled Rangers fans the ‘best in the world’ during his loan stint at Ibrox, finally made his debut for rivals Aberdeen on Saturday.

The Swiss/Albanian forward spent several months at Ibrox in 2020 on loan from Hibernian, making nine appearances in all competitions, scoring once and notching two assists.

Those modest returns wouldn’t prove to be enough to earn him a permanent deal with the Gers, though, and he returned to Easter Road before being sold to St Gallen in the summer.

Kamberi failed to settle at the Swiss Super League club, though and was made available for transfer in January, eventually joining Aberdeen on loan late on deadline day in a surprise return to Scottish football.

However, he hadn’t actually set foot in Scotland again until late last week with Covid-related issues delaying the processing of his work visa [Evening Express]

The problems ensured he missed defeats to Livingston and Hibernian but he was thrown straight into the starting XI against St Mirren on Saturday afternoon.

The Dons’ losing streak would come to an end but despite testing former Gers keeper Jak Alnwick with a shot from distance in the first half, Kamberi wasn’t able to score on debut and the game finished 0-0.

The 25-year-old could do his old loan club a favour on Wednesday night, though, with Aberdeen travelling to Glasgow for a Premiership fixture against Celtic at Parkhead.

Kamberi has scored three times against the Hoops in the past and a fourth strike could bring the Gers even closer to ending their long wait for a top-flight title.

Things may not have worked out for Kamberi following his move to mainland Europe but other players who spent time on loan at Ibrox are currently thriving there. One is a mainstay in an overachieving Ligue 1 side and the other is a defender pushing for a top-four spot in the Bundesliga.
