Rangers loan flop Kevin Mbabu has established himself in a Wolfsburg side that is flying high in the Bundesliga this season.

Mbabu joined the Gers on loan from Newcastle for the second half of the 2014/15 season but didn’t manage to make an impact at Ibrox, failing to make an appearance or even a matchday squad across his time with the club.

However, since leaving the Toon in 2017, his career has taken off.

After two impressive seasons with BSC Young Boys in Switzerland from which he picked up two Super League winners medals, Mbabu joined Wolfsburg for £8 million in the summer of 2019 on a four-year contract [Sky Sports].

The right-back made 27 appearances in his first season with the German club as they finished seventh in the top flight.

A ligament injury sustained in pre-season ensured his progress was halted somewhat at the start of this campaign, but after eventually returning to full fitness, he’s managed to re-establish himself in recent times.

Mbabu has featured in ten of Wolfsburg’s last eleven league matches, starting seven of those as Oliver Glasner’s side look to secure a Champions League spot.

A 0-0 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday constituted a setback, but Mbabu played the full 90 minutes and has now contributed to five consecutive shutouts in the league.

The ex Gers loanee has only notched one assist so far this season but, this weekend aside, goalscoring hasn’t been a problem for Die Wölfe, who are currently fourth in the table and level on points with third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.

Mbabu may not have made a splash at Ibrox but he’s now thriving at a high level and the 25-year-old Switzerland international could well find himself playing Champions League football next season.

Meanwhile, a player who spent time on loan at Ibrox as recently as 2019 is currently thriving in Ligue 1.
