Philippe Clement on why Rangers-Man Utd comparisons are wrong and what he won’t accept for clash

All eyes around the UK are going to be on Old Trafford tonight as Manchester United host Rangers in the Europa League.

It promises to be an intriguing battle as Gers will hope their Euro powers coupled with the Red Devils’ abysmal form can both be levellers and make it an even contest, even though Rangers’ form against English sides makes for grim reading.

But there is always a chance of the multi-million pound players showing the quality they do possess on the night.

However, Man Utd defender Harry Maguire is expecting Rangers to give them a tough night backed by a vociferous away support as always.

The stopper also admits he can’t put his finger on their current slump.

While pundit Owen Hargreaves has identified two United players who he reckons could struggle and the Light Blues can get at.

Manager Ruben Amorim has named two Rangers dangermen his side will need to be wary of as he knows what they’re coming up against.

The Portuguese boss expects a physical battle which his men will need to be prepared for.

There has also been a suggestion there are comparisons to be drawn between the clubs lately as both underachieve and fail to appease their expectant fan bases.

Clement denies Rangers-Man Utd comparisons

However, Gers boss Philippe Clement doesn’t see it that way.

The Belgian was asked if there are similarities between two “giant” clubs perhaps “in the shadow” of city rivals and “trying” to find their way.

But he told BBC Scotland: “I don’t think we can make a comparison if you see how what Man U has spent in the last couple of years and what we have spent. It is a totally different project that they are doing.

“They’re spending a lot, we’re spending not much. But we try to find really young talents to develop them.

“So no, different projects.”

Clement doesn’t want Rangers to be underdogs

It was also suggested that Clement might be happy for his side to be seen as underdogs and go in with not a lot expectation, but that was something that he also played down.

He doesn’t want his players to go into any game with feelings of inferiority.

He added: “No, I don’t like to be underdog. I like that my players are favourites, at least in their heads.

“Because otherwise if you’re an underdog, you don’t take control of the game, you don’t believe in yourself.

“When an opponent has a higher budget than us, I don’t want our players to feel like underdogs.

“I want them to be like fighters who believe they can win the fight. And that’s what we’re going to try to do.”
