As quoted by Not The Old Firm, Partick Thistle manager, Ian McCall, appears to have taken a swipe at both Rangers and Celtic.
Amidst the suspension of all professional and grassroots football, the Jags boss admitted there was uncertainty over the repercussions for player contracts and discussed the best way to resolve league tables if it proves impossible to resume fixtures.
In so doing, it seems he’s aimed a little dig at Glasgow’s big two.
“We need clarity but we have to understand how difficult it is when we don’t know enough about coronavirus,” he said, as quoted by Not The Old Firm, in reference to the current uncertainty. “I think there have been one or two unfortunate statements put out but other than that I think football does get together in times like this.”
He’s most likely referring to the statements released by Rangers and Celtic in the days following the initial suspension.
The Gers stressed that no title could be awarded in the case of an incomplete season, while Celtic argued that should that scenario occur, rather than the campaign being declared null and void, current league standings should be taken as final.
McCall then took another – this time less-veiled – swipe at Celtic, when directly discussing the idea of promotions and relegations.
“Outwith maybe one notable exception, if two teams get promoted from each league I don’t think those teams would be that bothered about getting a title in this day and age because of the circumstances” [Not The Old Firm].
The Thistle boss clearly believes the current debate over whether or not a Premiership champion will be crowned this season is a lot less important than the current public health predicament and the greater good of football.
In that regard, he’s undoubtedly correct.
However, it’s much easier looking from the outside in without all the pressure associated with the Old Firm, while it seems increasingly likely that this unprecedented scenario may force a decision to be made at some stage down the line.
