An article concerning Rangers, racism and Alfredo Morelos has been amended in the Glasgow Times after a backlash from Gers fans.

Members of the Ibrox support were left incensed when a column by journalist Catriona Stewart appeared to insinuate Rangers had condemned their own fans for racially abusing Alfredo Morelos.

Originally including the striker’s name in the title, any mention of Morelos has now been removed and the story retitled “Rangers fans must help stamp out racist abuse of players”.

Rangers fans rallied behind the club and the team’s black players after the Gers released a damning statement in the wake of criticism over players kneeling in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Scornful criticism from a vocal minority of Gers fans drew the ire of some of the club’s most prominent senior black players with the overwhelming majority of the Rangers support raising their fists in solidarity with their squad.

Rangers themselves made it very clear that anyone who does not support the players is “not welcome at Ibrox” [Rangers].

The same statement also mentioned the disgraceful racist abuse aimed at Alfredo Morelos during a live Instagram story, from an individual who is not considered to be connected to Rangers.

A police investigation has since been launched into the abuse.

However, there is a general feeling amongst the Ibrox support that the club’s statement and the incident involving Morelos has been unfairly twisted to attack the fan base.

Many of the club’s fans feel this is not a fair representation of the response or situation, with many taking to Twitter to express their anger.

Others have also pointed out that because Stewart claims she has “no interest in football” in the story she should’ve done more research on it before releasing it.

Some are seeing the fact it has been amended as vindication after an outpouring of criticism against the story this morning.
