Oscar Cortés returns for Rangers, now winger must get regular chance to return to form

Whether it is because there is nothing to play for or because the Rangers players simply aren’t good enough, something clearly isn’t right.

A team capable of scoring two or more goals every week with the second highest wage budget should be winning most weeks rather than having to come from two goals down.

Barry Ferguson was happy with the response, however, the recurring problems of his tenure as Rangers manager would be enough to get most bosses sacked.

The Hall of Fame legend midfielder at least has some options up front to choose from out of a Rangers squad that still needs a lot of work.

One of those who should be getting more game time between now and the end of the season made just his third start of the season against Aberdeen, Oscar Cortes.

Oscar Cortes should be given Rangers chance to find form

The Colombian winger is the source of frustration amongst the Ibrox faithful given the lack of impact for the £4m fee Rangers are going to pay Lens.

After arriving with a clean bill of health, Cortés has had nothing but bad luck.

His performances at the 2023 Under-20 World Cup and Copa America make him an exciting talent, but he needs time.

Cortés is going to be a Rangers player next season, Vaclav Cerny probably won’t.

There is no point playing Cerny every week when there is a player who actually needs the game time sitting on the bench.

The only way he will rediscover his best form is by playing games.

Yes, he’s been at Rangers for over a year, but he’s barely kicked a ball for the club and it is far too early to write the 22-year old off.

Who else should Ferguson turn to for next season?

Clinton Nsiala is another player who should benefit from the lack of anything to play for over the coming weeks.

He should also get the chance alongside John Souttar rather than Robin Propper.

For Aberdeen’s first goal, the more experienced Dutchman looked to blame his younger teammates around him when it was he who left his man to score.

It was the same against Kilmarnock when Nsiala was hooked early by Ferguson.

Yes, the summer signing was poor, but he wasn’t helped by Propper, who should be guiding the younger players through games, not blaming them when things go wrong.
