Former Rangers-linked player Albert Guðmundsson is reportedly very close to completing a move from AZ Alkmaar to Serie A side Genoa for €1.2m according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

Rangers were previously linked with the Icelandic player at the beginning of the transfer window [DailyRecord], alongside rivals Celtic, as his contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

Now both clubs appear to have missed out on the talented 24-year-old, who may well have been the answer to Rangers’ current right-wing problems.

In a total of 28 matches this season, he has scored six goals and provided two assists [TransferMarkt], proving that he could be a goal threat from the wing, something that the Ibrox side urgently needs.

Albert Guðmundsson has a Rangers family connection which could have sealed a move

Although there were other clubs after the player, the Gers may have held a slight advantage due to a Rangers family connection that involved his great-grandfather.

Albert Sigurður Guðmundsson had a brief spell at the Ibrox side in the 1940s before heading south to join Arsenal, whilst also having stints at both AC Milan and Nancy Lorraine.

Unfortunately, it looks like Genoa is extremely close to securing the signature of the player and Rangers will miss out.

It could well have been excellent business getting a player of that quality in the door in January, especially with the fee being quoted. Under van Bronckhorst and his array of Dutch coaches, Guðmundsson may well have thrived up in Scotland.

Thoughts turn to the remaining hours of the transfer window and who else Rangers could bring in to strengthen the squad as a massive four months await.

Meanwhile, a former Rangers midfielder was praised by his new boss following an impressive debut.
