Ex-Rangers midfielder praised on debut as Ibrox move proved a step too far

Former Rangers midfielder Juninho Bacuna made his first start for new club Birmingham as he was thrust straight into the deep end against Derby.

Birmingham eased into a two-goal advantage and looked set to wrap up all three points before Wayne Rooney’s Derby showed their fighting spirit that has kept them going as of late.

Goals in the 87th and 96th minutes rescued Derby and gave them a share of the spoils and still gives them a chance of escaping relegation to League One following their points deduction.

Rangers summer recruitment flaws examined as Juninho Bacuna goes straight into the Birmingham starting XI

With Bacuna starting the match for Birmingham following his struggles at Rangers then it appears as if the midfielder has found his level.

There were high hopes for him when he joined the Ibrox side in the summer after playing in the Premier League for Huddersfield, but performances never seemed to materialise, and he joined Birmingham last week.

Despite this, new boss Lee Bowyer spoke to the media after the match and had nothing but praise for the midfielder.

“Juninho [Bacuna] brought us something in the middle of the park, composure could receive the ball and can play.” Said Bowyer [bcfc].

Hopefully, he can get a good run of matches in the English Championship and show the form that was clearly lacking at Rangers.

This just shows how big a step up it is coming to Ibrox, every performance has to be solid, and even though there were glimpses of Bacuna’s potential, it wasn’t enough to convince Giovanni van Bronckhorst to stick with him.

It was good business removing him from the wage bill and hopefully, this can pave the way for some much-needed January additions.

In other news, Rangers appear to be leading the chase for Man City youngster James McAtee as Gio’s relationship with Pep Guardiola could be vital.
